Organizing children’s books

Do you have a lot of children’s books?  Check out these ideas for keeping books organized and easy to find.

Storage Options

Baskets

For younger children, you might want to consider a small basket or bin for books.  Baskets are great because children can take out the books when they want to read.  It also makes for easy clean-up.

Wooden bookcase or shelf

Another storage option to hold books is a standard wooden bookcase.  They come in various heights and widths.

For one room, we chose a five foot bookcase.  The children’s books are on the lower shelf, and the Hardy Boy books are on another shelf.  This helps to keep everything nice and neat.

Perhaps you have one dedicated shelf for all of the books.  In this case, consider organizing the books by height.  They look neat and organized.  The small volume of books still makes them easy to find.

Cubes

Storage cubes are another alternative for storing books.  We have a nine-cube organizer.  Four of the cubes hold books, and the other five cubes have bins to hold toys.

It’s great if you can put the books into categories.  Below, you’ll find out different options for organizing books.

Ways to Organize Books

By Category

All train books are grouped together.  We have a lot of books about trains, so they are all in one cube.  If we are looking for a book about trains, we know to look in the bottom right cube.

By Size

The largest books are all located together in the lower left cube.  It has all of the thickest and biggest books.  So you ‘ll find the children’s dictionary and picture bible here, along with the books that have 10 Curious George stories all in one book.

By Season

All of the holiday and seasonal books are found in the upper right cube.  They are in chronological order.  For example:

  • Winter
  • Valentine’s Day
  • St. Patrick’s Day
  • Easter
  • Spring
  • Summer
  • Fall
  • Going to school
  • Halloween
  • Thanksgiving
  • Christmas

By Series

We’ve started to buy multiple books by the same author.  Those books are all in the upper left cube.  Here you ‘ll find books like:

  • Diary of a Whimpy Kid (By Jeff Kinney)
  • Dr. Seuss
  • Fly Guy (by Ted Arnold)
  • Little Critter (by Mercer Mayer)
  • Scooby Doo

Library Books

It’s also a good idea to have one location for all of the library books.  We find it helpful to keep them on top of our 9 cube organizer.  That way, all of the library books are together, in a section of their own.
