Tips for Cleaning your Refrigerator

Cleaning your refrigerator can be a daunting task.  Are you ready to tackle your refrigerator?  Follow this plan to make the cleaning job easier:

Schedule a day to clean the inside of your refrigerator.  It’s actually much easier if you agree with the following statement:  “It all revolves around trash day.”  Take a look at the following schedule, based on a Tuesday trash pick-up day.

Day

Task

Saturday and Sunday Plan to eat leftovers.
Monday Toss all of the leftover food.Toss all jars and containers that have expired, or that you do not plan to eat.  Do this one shelf at a time.

Plan to do your tossing the day before the garbage truck comes to your house. (Hint: if you do this on a regular basis, it makes life a lot easier.)

Don’t have trash service?  Select the day you most often bring out the trash, and call it trash day.

Monday Time to clean the fridge.  Now that the fridge is just about empty, cleaning will be easier.
Tuesday

*** Trash Day ***

Bring garbage cans to street.

Go grocery shopping. 🙂

Now personalize the chart above for your own use.  Start by entering your “Trash Day” and then determine your ideal day to clean your refrigerator.

Tips on how to clean your refrigerator:

Take one shelf at a time.  Put the items you plan to keep on another shelf in your refrigerator, or on your kitchen counter.  Take out each shelf and drawer and wash in soapy water.  If your shelves are glass, just be careful with the water temperature.  You don’t want to go from cold to hot too fast, as the glass could break.

Some areas, like the shelf or drawer for meat, may require a disinfecting wipe.  After you wipe it down, you can wipe it dry with a paper towel so that it doesn’t leave a wet residue of cleaner.

Now your refrigerator is ready to store all of the new groceries.  Going forward, try to wipe up spills when they occur.  It also helps if you wipe down the shelves before putting in new groceries each week.

Happy cleaning!
