computer files.\u00a0 This is one project you don\u2019t want to put off.<\/p>\n<h3>What can happen to computers?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Data loss can occur if your computer:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">crashes<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">obtains a virus<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">is stolen<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">incurs a power surge<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">gets damaged by a natural disaster (flood, hurricane, tornado)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Of course, there&#8217;s always a chance that you might accidentally delete a file, and need to get it back.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s look at four ways you can back-up your files.<\/p>\n<h3>External Hard Drive<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">One of the easiest ways to back-up your computer files is with an external hard drive.\u00a0 This is a device that is the size of a small book.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/runningahousehold.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Backup-External-Hard-Drive.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2189\" alt=\"Backup External Hard Drive\" src=\"https:\/\/runningahousehold.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Backup-External-Hard-Drive-300x224.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/runningahousehold.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Backup-External-Hard-Drive-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/runningahousehold.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Backup-External-Hard-Drive.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Some external hard drives can be connected\u00a0to your wireless network, and scheduled to automatically back-up your files daily.\u00a0 If it isn\u2019t connected to your network, you can plug it in to the USB drive of your computer, and back up your files manually.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>Pros<\/b>: This method is very simple.\u00a0 When set up to automatically back-up daily, it ensures your files are backed up.\u00a0 These devices hold a lot of data, so all of the files and pictures from a household computer should fit on just one external hard drive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>Cons<\/b>: External hard drives have been known to fail.\u00a0 So you may want to consider a secondary back-up file.\u00a0 This happened to me, and my heart sank.\u00a0 I could not believe the hard drive wouldn\u2019t turn on.\u00a0 However, I was so relieved that my pictures were backed-up in another spot.\u00a0 These devices also cost a little more money, generally ranging from $80 &#8211; $200 depending on the brand and amount of storage space.<\/p>\n<h3>USB Flash Drives<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">USB Flash Drives\u00a0are small storage devices a little shorter than a stick of gum.\u00a0 They vary in storage space.\u00a0 Some hold as little as 2 GB of data.\u00a0 The most common ones hold 4, 8, 16 or 32 GB of data.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re backing up your entire computer, including pictures, you&#8217;ll need one of the larger sizes, such as 64\u00a0or 128 GB.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/runningahousehold.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Backup-USB-Flash-Drive.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2190\" alt=\"Backup USB Flash Drive\" src=\"https:\/\/runningahousehold.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Backup-USB-Flash-Drive-300x224.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/runningahousehold.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Backup-USB-Flash-Drive-300x224.jpg 300w, 30px;\"><b>Pros<\/b>: They are small and easy to use.\u00a0 The back-up process is fast, especially if all of your information fits on one or two flash drives.\u00a0 They are relatively inexpensive.\u00a0 Most of the smaller ones can be purchased on sale for $8 &#8211; 40.\u00a0 They are very easy to store in a small case.\u00a0 You can transport them easily.\u00a0 They are relatively reliable.\u00a0 I\u2019ve owned many of these, and not one has failed yet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>Cons<\/b>: If you have a lot of files, it can be expensive to back-up your files this way.<\/p>\n<h3>CDs and DVDs<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">While backing-up files via CD\/DVD\u00a0is a little old-fashioned, it is still a reliable option, especially for backing-up pictures.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/runningahousehold.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Backup-CD.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2191\" alt=\"Backup CD\" src=\"https:\/\/runningahousehold.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Backup-CD-300x224.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/runningahousehold.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Backup-CD-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/runningahousehold.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Backup-CD.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>Pros<\/b>: From a personal experience, this method has been more reliable than an external hard drive.\u00a0 The CDs are relatively inexpensive.\u00a0 You can purchase them on sale for $5 &#8211; 20, depending on how many come in the package.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>Cons<\/b>: If you have a lot of pictures, you\u2019ll need quite a few CDs.\u00a0 It is also time-consuming to back-up your pictures this way.\u00a0 The CDs have been known to fail.\u00a0 Be sure to confirm that your pictures were transferred to the CD.<\/p>\n<h3>Offsite Companies<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">There are companies that offer to\u00a0store your\u00a0files.\u00a0 You simply go to their website, pay for their service.\u00a0 Then\u00a0upload your files through the internet, and your files will be stored off-site.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>Pros<\/b>: This method is good for protecting against natural disasters and house fires, since your files are stored off-site.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>Cons<\/b>: We are always concerned about the privacy of our information.\u00a0 By transferring it to an outside firm, you no longer maintain control over the security.\u00a0 Files could be hacked into, no matter how secure or encrypted.<\/p>\n<h3>Keep an older copy of your backed-up files<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">If you are backing up your files on a regular basis, it is possible that your back-up files will be corrupt.\u00a0 For example, if your computer obtained a virus last week, and you didn\u2019t know it.\u00a0 By over-writing your files each day, you could be backing up files that are corrupt with a virus.\u00a0 In other words, it&#8217;s great to back-up daily to an external hard drive or to an outside company.\u00a0 However, if your computer gets a virus, do not assume that the files you backed up the night before can be recovered virus-free.\u00a0 So it\u2019s a good idea to keep an older copy of your backed up files on hand.\u00a0 It&#8217;s better than nothing at all.<\/p>\n<p>Now that you have a few ideas, it&#8217;s time to get to work.\u00a0 This is something you don\u2019t want to put off.\u00a0 If your computer crashes, or gets a virus, you\u2019ll be glad to have a back-up file (or two) to
