{"id":2133,"date":"2014-01-15T09:25:21","date_gmt":"2014-01-15T14:25:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/runningahousehold.com\/?p=2133"},"modified":"2014-01-14T17:55:48","modified_gmt":"2014-01-14T22:55:48","slug":"repairing-or-replacing-a-broken-appliance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/runningahousehold.com\/?p=2133","title":{"rendered":"Repairing or Replacing a Broken Appliance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Did you ever have a washing machine break down?\u00a0 How about a stove, oven or dishwasher?\u00a0 These everyday appliances make our lives easier by handling some of the\u00a0household chores.\u00a0 We\u00a0know how valuable they are when they breakdown.\u00a0 Should you repair it or just replace it with a new one?\u00a0 Here are some things to consider.<\/p>\n<h3>Age of Appliance<\/h3>\n<p>The age of your appliance may help you decide if it&#8217;s time for a new one.\u00a0 When my 15-year-old dishwasher broke, it was an easy decision.\u00a0 It&#8217;s time for a new one.\u00a0 I only paid $400 for it, so it didn&#8217;t owe me anything.\u00a0 It was also time to upgrade to a quieter model with a stainless steel front.\u00a0 So for under $800, we replaced our dishwasher.<\/p>\n<h3>Cost<\/h3>\n<p>Let&#8217;s face it, times are tough.\u00a0 So when something breaks, we have to look at two prices:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How much will it cost to repair it?<\/li>\n<li>How much will it cost to buy a new one?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even if the appliance is older, if you don&#8217;t have the money to buy a new one, then your only alternative might be to simply repair it.<\/p>\n<p>If you can afford to replace it, then consider\u00a0 if it&#8217;s worth repairing, or if it&#8217;s better to buy a new one.\u00a0 Case in point: Our washing machine broke at 6:00 on New Years Day.\u00a0 I went downstairs to put the clothes in the clothes in the dryer only to catch a scent of burnt rubber.\u00a0 When I opened the washing machine, I found that the water never drained.\u00a0 The washing machine stopped before the high spin cycle ran.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Temporary solution<\/strong>: I couldn&#8217;t leave the clothes in water overnight.\u00a0 So we took a large cup and a pail, and drained some of the water by hand.\u00a0 Next, I rang out the clothes by hand, getting as much of the water out as possible.\u00a0 We put the clothes in the dryer, and dried them on the lowest setting.\u00a0 I thought the clothes were clean, but wanted to\u00a0wash them again\u00a0once my washing machine was working again.<\/p>\n<h3>Decision factors<\/h3>\n<p>The next morning I priced out a new washing machine.\u00a0 Just eight years ago, I paid $800 for my washing machine and dryer.\u00a0 Here were some of the options I found for buying a new one:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$800 for a new washing machine and dryer; This washing machine would be much smaller than my extra-large capacity one<\/li>\n<li>$800 for new extra-large capacity washer<\/li>\n<li>$1200 for a new extra-large capacity washer and matching dryer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I really didn&#8217;t want to spend that much money.\u00a0 The thought of going out in a snowstorm on January 2nd to shop for a washing machine was also unappealing.\u00a0 So, I\u00a0called a repair company.\u00a0 They thought I needed a new motor, and gave me an estimate of $330.\u00a0 In the end, it needed a new pump because a tiny baby sock was wedged in the pump.\u00a0 So for $300, they repaired it on-site two business days later, and it was up and running again.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a lot to consider when your appliances break down.\u00a0 Regardless of whether you choose to repair or replace your appliance, it&#8217;s just so nice once everything is running properly and back to normal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Do you need a few more tips for running your household?\u00a0 Check out these areas on our site:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/runningahousehold.com\/?page_id=19\" target=\"_blank\">Maintenance Schedules<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/runningahousehold.com\/?page_id=25\" target=\"_blank\">Meal Planning Forms<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/runningahousehold.com\/?page_id=1357\" target=\"_blank\">Organization<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Did you ever have a washing machine break down?\u00a0 How about a stove, oven or dishwasher?\u00a0 These everyday appliances make our lives easier by handling some of the\u00a0household chores.\u00a0 We\u00a0know how valuable they are when they breakdown.\u00a0 Should you repair it or just replace it with a new one?\u00a0 Here are some things to consider.
