{"id":1836,"date":"2013-11-14T09:25:25","date_gmt":"2013-11-14T14:25:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/runningahousehold.com\/?p=1836"},"modified":"2013-11-13T20:56:17","modified_gmt":"2013-11-14T01:56:17","slug":"its-time-to-clean-out-your-gutters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/runningahousehold.com\/?p=1836","title":{"rendered":"It\u2019s Time to Clean Out Your Gutters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Are your gutters full of fall leaves?\u00a0 Take a few minutes to clean them out, before winter officially arrives.\u00a0 Check out our tips on gutter maintenance.<\/p>\n<h3>Benefits of Cleaning Out Your Gutters<\/h3>\n<p>Gutters are designed to take the water off your roof, and move it off to the sides of your home.\u00a0 Otherwise, water would pour down and pool near your foundation.<\/p>\n<p>By keeping your gutters clean, water will flow away from your home.\u00a0 However, if your gutters are full of leaves and debris, they will overflow with water.\u00a0 This water can seep into the soil, and into your basement.<\/p>\n<p>Keeping your gutters clean during the winter will help prevent ice dams.\u00a0 If you live in a colder climate, clogged gutters can lead to an ice dam.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">What is an ice dam?\u00a0 An ice dam is a layer of ice that forms at the lower edge of a roof.\u00a0 It stops the melting snow, rain and water from draining off the roof.\u00a0 As a result the water backs up behind the dam, and can leak into your home causing damage to your ceiling, walls and insulation.<\/p>\n<p>Proper gutter maintenance will help your gutters last longer.\u00a0 If you\u00a0keep the leaves and helicopters in the gutters, small trees can start to grow.\u00a0 In addition, the gutters will get heavy.\u00a0 They will eventually sag, or separate from the house, and will need to be replaced.<\/p>\n<p>So, are you ready to clean your gutters?<\/p>\n<h3>How to Clean Gutters<\/h3>\n<p>There are several ways to clean your gutters.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Leaf Blower<\/strong>: If you are willing to stay on top of it, a leaf blower works great.\u00a0 However, once the leaves get wet, and start to decay, using a leaf blower is no longer an option.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gloves and a bag\/pail<\/strong>: If you are dealing with wet, soggy leaves, put on some rubber gloves.\u00a0 You\u2019ll want heavy-duty gloves, since some gutters can be sharp.\u00a0 You\u2019ll also need a bag or pail to collect the leaves.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Depending on the location of your gutters, you may need a ladder.\u00a0 Other gutters may be accessed more easily through an upstairs window, or by standing up on the roof.\u00a0 If your roof is too high, or very steep, you may want to hire a professional to clean out your gutters.<\/p>\n<p>Happy cleaning!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are your gutters full of fall leaves?\u00a0 Take a few minutes to clean them out, before winter officially arrives.\u00a0 Check out our tips on gutter maintenance.
