{"id":1154,"date":"2013-07-03T09:25:15","date_gmt":"2013-07-03T13:25:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/runningahousehold.com\/?p=1154"},"modified":"2013-07-01T22:22:17","modified_gmt":"2013-07-02T02:22:17","slug":"blueberry-picking-tips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/runningahousehold.com\/?p=1154","title":{"rendered":"Blueberry Picking Tips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Are you interested in picking your own blueberries?\u00a0 Follow these tips to make your trip worthwhile:<\/p>\n<h3>Plan Ahead<\/h3>\n<p>Before your go picking, you\u2019ll want to do the following things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Call ahead to confirm berries are ready and to determine the picking hours<\/li>\n<li>Plan to go early in the morning.\u00a0 If you can, go as soon as they open.\u00a0 You\u2019ll have a better selection of blueberries, since the bushes won\u2019t be picked over.<\/li>\n<li>Wear old clothes because you might get a blueberry stain.\u00a0 It usually comes out in the wash, but just in case\u2026<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Things to Bring<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>A small container with a string \u2013 It\u2019s easier to pick blueberries with a plastic bucket hanging around your neck.\u00a0 This is simple to make at home.\u00a0 You\u2019ll need a clean plastic container the size of a coffee can.\u00a0 Make two holes in each side and attach string or yarn.\u00a0 Some farms even provide these buckets, so ask when you call.<\/li>\n<li>Water &#8211; You\u2019ll be thirsty after picking.<\/li>\n<li>Cash &#8211; Many small farms do not have credit card machines.<\/li>\n<li>A change of shoes: I prefer to wear old sneakers.\u00a0 Sometimes, over-ripe blueberries fall off the bushes.\u00a0 They are usually on the ground, and are easy to step on while you are picking.\u00a0 You may also want to bring a change of shoes.\u00a0 If you step on a berry, you won\u2019t want to track it into your car.<\/li>\n<li>Clean up supplies:\u00a0 Baby wipes or wet face cloth in plastic bag.\u00a0 You will want to clean your fingers after picking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>In the field<\/h3>\n<p>Usually, only certain sections are open.\u00a0 Try to pick a bush that no one has picked yet.\u00a0 It will make picking much faster, and berries are usually larger since they aren\u2019t picked over.<\/p>\n<p>Since you pay by the pound, you\u2019ll want to pick clean.\u00a0 That means, do not pick the stems.\u00a0 Pick the blueberry where the stem meets the berry.\u00a0 Leave the whole stem behind.\u00a0 You only want the blueberry in your bucket.\u00a0 No stems.<\/p>\n<p>Be sure to look on the very top and underneath of each blueberry bush.\u00a0 Many people simple pick along the middle of the bush where you can easily see the berries.\u00a0 By looking at the top and underneath, you\u2019ll find lots of berries.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s okay to eat a few blueberries while you are there.\u00a0 After all, you want to know if the berries are sweet and tasty.\u00a0 Just don\u2019t overdo it. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<h3>After you finish picking<\/h3>\n<p>You\u2019ll want to get the blueberries home and into the refrigerator.\u00a0 I like to transfer mine into a colander, so that there a few holes to allow air in.
