Getting Organized with a Label Maker

Do you own a label maker? If not, read on to see how you can get organized with a label maker.

What is a Label Maker?

A label maker is a portable machine that prints out labels. The average one is the size of a small, thick book. It has a keyboard with letters and punctuation marks.

What Can You Do With a Label Maker?

The projects are endless, but for starters you can label your files. I always planned to print labels from my computer. That didn’t happen, but with a portable label maker, it’s easy to print one out.

You can also label the following items:

  • Files, folders and binders
  • Boxes
  • Bins and containers
  • School projects
  • Spices
  • Jars
  • Shelves
  • Christmas storage

Types of Labels

Many label makers offer different colors of labels. For now, I use black ink on clear labels or white labels. The white labels come in handy if you are putting a label on a clear plastic bin. It’s much easier to read with a white label.

Brands of Label Makers

There are many brands of label makers. As with any purchase, do your homework. It really depends on how much you want to spend, as well as what features you need.

I opted for the Epson Label Works LW400.  There are several fonts and font sizes to choose from.  This one offers the capability to print barcodes.  It came stocked with a sample roll of white label tape. In addition, I ordered a roll of clear label tape. Both rolls of tape have kept me quite busy.

The Epson is easy to use right out of the box. It is battery operated, but you can purchase a power cord if you prefer.  Just turn it on, and start typing.  Hit the print button when you’re ready.  Press the green scissor button to complete your label.  It’s that easy.
